South India has a tropical climate. In Kerala it is dry in the winter, and pleasantly warm. The monsoon hits Kerala in June and July, gradually becoming less through August to November. Karnataka follows the same rhyme, but has much lower rainfall, so that many parts look parched in the dry season. In Tamil Nadu it becomes hot and humid during April and May, while the rain comes with the Winter monsoon in October to December.

visits by the Portuguese in 1500, and the subsequent Dutch and British involvement. Kerala is the longest-lived, healthiest, most gender-equitable, most literate state in India.
